By five weeks old, Camiyah received a diagnosis that would forever change the course of her life: biliary atresia, a rare condition in which the bile ducts inside and outside the liver are scarred or blocked. This progressive disease, which affects only a small number of newborns, prevents the liver from draining bile effectively, leading to liver damage and, ultimately, life-threatening complications.
Immediately following the diagnosis, Camiyah underwent a complex surgical procedure called the Kasai operation. The goal was to remove the damaged bile ducts and connect her intestines directly to the liver, giving her the chance to process bile and preserve her liver function. While the surgery was performed with precision and care, the operation ultimately failed, leaving her liver unable to function properly. The doctors explained that her only chance for survival now lies in a liver transplant.
Since her diagnosis, Camiyah’s life has been a whirlwind of hospital visits, procedures, and treatments. Her parents have spent countless hours by her side, navigating the uncertainty, fears, and relentless stress that accompany a serious medical condition in an infant. A Day That Changed Everything: A Family’s Fight to Bring Johnny Back.1631
October 29, 2025 began like any other school day. We packed our son’s backpack, kissed him goodbye, and watched him walk into his first-grade classroom with his usual bright smile. He was healthy, happy, energetic—a little boy at the very beginning of discovering the world. Nothing, absolutely nothing, could have prepared us for what would happen just a few hours later.
By 1 p.m., Johnny—our cheerful, curious six-year-old—was in an ambulance, fighting for his life.
Just after noon, without any fall, accident, or warning, our son suddenly lost consciousness. One moment he was in class, the next he collapsed onto the floor. At 12:30, the school called us. Their voices were trembling. They had already phoned emergency services. We rushed over, terrified, arriving even before the ambulance. We climbed into the vehicle with him, praying he would open his eyes, praying that this was somehow all a mistake.
At the first hospital, doctors performed a head CT scan. The results shattered our world. They found extensive intracranial bleeding—massive hemorrhaging deep within his brain. He needed immediate transfer to a neurosurgical ICU. Everything happened at lightning speed. We barely had time to think, only to fear.
He was taken urgently to the Karol Jonscher Clinical Hospital in Poznań. Before 4 p.m., our little boy was already in the operating room for a craniectomy—removal of part of his skull to reduce dangerous intracranial pressure. The neurosurgeons warned us that the situation was critical. The bleeding was deep, the swelling severe. If pressure changed too quickly, his brain could “explode,” they said. It felt like someone had ripped the floor out from beneath us. One moment we were living a normal life, the next we were being told our child might not survive the night.
But somehow, miraculously, the surgery went well. We clung to that fragile thread of hope. We waited for him to wake up so we could hold his hand and tell him that Mama and Papa were here, that he wasn’t alone. After six long days, doctors attempted to wake him from the medically induced coma… but he did not open his eyes. He did not respond. He remains in a coma still.
The neurological damage is extensive. The hematoma sits in an extremely dangerous part of the brain. The early prognosis was devastating—doctors spoke of the possibility of a permanent vegetative state. Words no parent should ever hear, words that don’t feel real no matter how many times they’re repeated. How could this happen to a healthy child who just hours earlier was learning, laughing, living?
And yet, in this sea of fear and grief, small sparks of hope have begun to appear.
In the last two days, Johnny has shown faint but promising signs—opening his left eye slightly, moving his right hand. These movements aren’t voluntary yet, and he’s not conscious, but they are signs that his brain is fighting. That somewhere inside, our son is still trying to return to us.
Now the hardest part begins.
Johnny’s survival is only the first step. The road ahead is long, complex, and unimaginably expensive. Because of the severe neurological damage, he will need months—possibly years—of intensive rehabilitation. He will require specialized therapy, state-of-the-art medical equipment, and, later on, safe transportation to and from treatment centers. Another major surgery—skull reconstruction—awaits him before rehabilitation can even begin.
Neurologists have told us repeatedly that the first months are crucial. Early, intensive neurorehabilitation may give him a chance at regaining basic functions…and perhaps even returning to a near-normal life. It has happened before in similar cases. We refuse to give up on that possibility. We refuse to surrender our son’s future.
But rehabilitation of this caliber costs 30,000–40,000 złoty per month—an amount far beyond what our family can manage. We want to do everything humanly possible to help our child, but we cannot do it alone.
That is why we are turning to the kindness of others.
